Quick suggestions,
Things to do in Cape Town -
table mountain of course - we went up about 7pm, queued for a
while and got
to top about 7.45 for sunset at 8, prettiest sky is about 8.15.
signal hill lookout - about 10 mins drive from cable car
station, you wont
need to stop long - about 10 mins, but it's worth it to see the
V&A
waterfront. there's a lookout from the carpark then a 2 minute
walk over to
see down to V&A
we also went into 'city bowl' company's gardens - pretty for a
sit down but
not amazing. District 6 museum is really good. we also saw
parliament (not
that exciting) and bo kaap Wale Street (pretty street with
coloured houses)
worth a wonder up
Listen out for the midday gun fired from half way up signall
hill, i didn't
know what it was when i heard it.
Kirstenbosch - lovely cafe which makes up sandwhiches or rolls
(millions of
fillings or bread types) or salads and fruit salads. does mini
bottles of
wine / beer etc buy them and take them into the gardens for a
picnic. suday
evening concert is about 5pm, you dont need tickets as you can
sit next door
to the ticketed area and hear the music!
you must drive down the coast from V&A, green point, past
clifton beaches
(we went down to 3rd beach, prettty but not necessary to go down
there!) and
stop at camps bay. we ate at blue bar and bayside cafe and can
highly
recommend both, food was delicious at both. we had lunch at blue
(we didn't
book) the day i arrived.
Chapmans peak drive - stunning views lots of lookouts.
Noordhoek beach - no proper lookout but I think we pulled in so
i could take
a photo. not much in noerdhoek itself - we had drinks in 'the
trading post'
and 'fingo cafe' next door. would recommend fingo, very
pleasant. then you
can drive down the the beach carpark from there to see the sand.
Day trip from hermanus.
you may as well do cape peninsula and boulders beach (penguins)
in one day .
we briefly stopped in kalk bay (not too exciting) but you can
spent quite
a while at the peninsula. at cape point lighthouse do the extra
walk to dias
lookout and the new lighthouse lookout (note the date it was
switched on!)
it takes about 20 minutes return. We also went to platboom
beach just north
of cape of good hope - the beach with the sand river, really
pretty.
From hermanus we went east 30km to de kelders. small place, one
little cafe
'cafe on the rocks' very pleasant. that's where you can go down
to a cave
and swim if you want. we saw a whale there.
Franschoek -
the vineyards we went to were chamonix (that's where the
flavoured water is)
La motte - this is beautifully presented with medals etc,
Glenwood -
winetasting on the lawn.
the place you could eat it Rubens - we ate at Le Bon Vivant
(small portions
amazingly presented!!) and french connection, both nice.
hope that's helpful, have an amazing time!
Garden Route:
I can summarise
where we went on the garden route.
Oudtshoorn - interesting little town, lots of ostrich farms. Cango
ostrich
farm does a Good tour about the life cycle of the ostrich, The
tea gardens
are lovely and the cango caves is a really interesting limestone
cave - I
recomment the active tour which we did (if your friend isn't
claustophobic)
lots of small spaces. This is where we did the hot air balloon
ride.
We stopped at various beaches on the garden route and stayed in
Knysna for 2
nights. www.kanonkoptours.com was our luxury guesthouse in
knysna which was
fantastic!
Mossel bay - funny little seaside town, fairly standard little
cafe on the
beach front, sheltered pool for swimmming in.
Victoria Bay - tiny little bay with little cafe, sheltered
beach, quite
pretty,
Buffels bay - stunning sweeping white and beaches, rocks.
beautiful bay,
minimal development (actually we didn't even go to the
town-proper, just
went to the nature reserve and first part of the beach, not far
off the N2)
our favourite place.
Knysna - would recommend a trip out to knysna heads, little
bar/restaurant
and walk around the cliff to the edge of the mouth to the bay is
pretty.
Main part of town is the waterfront development which is like a
mini V&A
harbour with cafes and restaurants. would recommend Docks
restaurant, lovely
fish. we didn't really go to the forests or elephant park which
are big
attractions as we were going onto the tsitsikamma national park
beyond the
garden route.
Natures valley, just beyond knysna towards Plettenberg bay -
lovely lagoon
and huge sweeping white sand beach. again quite sheltered and
amazing huge
sandy beach.
hope that's some help!
